10th March Board 4
There were plenty of hands to choose from, but this hand stood out because not many pairs got it right.
W was dealer and had a good hand as below:
S. A8
H. AKJT2
D. AK53
C. 32
19hcp points and 5 top tricks.
They opened 1H, N pass, E with 6S and only 5hcp and a void in H, bids 1S. S with nothing to say passes.
W showing his strength bids 3D. This bid shows 5 Hs and 4 Ds and 16+ hcp. E hates both of his bids but really can’t leave partner in 3D with 4/2 fit, but it appears most E players did. Time evaluate your hand, 6 Ss and void in Hs. I know you should not count distribution points if your partner has bid your void, but here it is important as your partner can throw losers in your hand away on Hs. Partner only know you probably have 4Ss, so you should tell him/her otherwise bid 3S. Now partner knows you have 5 more likely 6Ss, if his distribution is 2542, he has a 6/2 fit and can bid 4S, if he has 1543 then he can bid 3NT.
In this case it is 6/2 fit so can bid 4S. Contract bid and made.
